I work for The Man

Reboot Resolutions 2011

I do this every year, on or around New Years. And I do get a kick out of looking back throughout the year to check on progress and see what’s changed. Or what hasn’t. Last year was a huge year for me. Moving to California, a lifelong dream, had its own rewards and serious challenges (more on that later). But January 1 came and went without so much as thought toward what my goals were for the year ahead.

This was partly because I was so utterly slammed before I left for 10 days of holiday hell on the east coast in December and partly because I returned to SF completely convinced I was over New York (at least living there) and completely ill.

January started a Q1 that sucked every once of emotional and intellectual energy I had. And generally just sucked.

From a demoralizing all-encompassing project. To three months of 12-17 hour days. Long commutes to Sunnyvale, 7:00 a.m. conference calls and 10:00 p.m. document reviews. I started thinking - ‘I’m working so hard to further everyone else’s career ambitions but not my own.’

The few upsides included a handful of new connections whose insight and friendship I enjoyed - OV, BU, CC, JW, AvO, AZ, RW. And 27 days of awesome Tahoe skiing, connecting with old friends and a January that, weather-wise, made the thought of living in New York again and long-distant concept.

Thus waking up from this abusive period, post vacation and post a trip to NYC, I resolved to RESOLVE to make life better. To make it a life and not a transplanted grind. So April 1 was my New Year’s.

Herewith is how I will approach the remaining year ahead. To appreciate life and nature more and make the most of my moments here.

  1. I can never drink enough water. So I will be drinking water like I never have before.
  2. Yoga more, tennis more, culture more.
  3. Television less. Netflix less. iTunes store less.
  4. Devote one hour a day to not working on work. Spending 35 hours a day working. (I know that sounds slackerish, but its not. Its investing in me and my future.).
  5. Eat a California diet. I’m not really sure what this means… so yeah avocados and sprouts. But mostly consciously healthy.
  6. Spend more time outside.
  7. Enjoy the fabulous beauty of my new home state.
  8. Call mom more.
  9. Get back in fighting shape.
  10. Travel more for pleasure and relaxation.
  11. Make quiet time to reflect.
  12. Lastly, blog more.

I’ll elaborate more later. But that’s a start to making this a better year and hopefully toward being a better person.
